I used to yell this at my playing partners, who I thought, were not in the know about the rules of golf. In reality they probably weren't and were just trying to be helpful while I would putt from the fringe. But after seeing Tiger Woods putt from the fringe yesterday on the 12th Hole at the Bridgestone Invitaitonal I started doing some research (I'd hate to see his -2 round be reduced to an even par round due to his new caddy's oversight).

Turns out, Rule 17 of The Rules of Golf actually allows for the pin to be attended from ANY postion on the golf course as long as the golfer in question request such an action. Many of us subscribe to the strategy of leaving the pin in on a downhill putt or chip and pulling it from an uphill putt or chip -- the thought being that the pin might stop the ball if it's hit too firmly on a downhill shot and vice versa. But the reality is if you're putting from the finge you can have the pin tended. You could even have someone tend the pin while you're teeing off if you really think you can hit that far.

Use the rules. Rule your game.
